Bear Camp Road is Open

Bear Camp Road is open and ready for public travel for the recreation season. Due to minimal snowpack last winter on the south coastal mountain range, no snow removal was necessary, and local residents and outfitters have begun using the road.

The Galice access gates were open in February due to the closing of the Peavine Road when damage was sustained after a storm event. The Peavine Road remains closed and the repair date is unknown at this time.

Not all Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and BLM roads have been maintained or checked after the winter season. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and avoid using less traveled roads, particularly earlier in the field season before all road surfaces are thoroughly dry.

Good preparation and driving habits are important when traveling on forest roads, as weather and road conditions may change rapidly. Be prepared with extra blankets, food, water, clothing and emergency equipment. When driving, keep lights on, speed down and be prepared to stop for oncoming traffic, particularly on blind corners.

For additional information on the Bear Camp Road and current road status, contact the Gold Beach Ranger Station at 541-247-3600, or the Wild Rivers Ranger Station at 541-471-6500 (Grants Pass office) or at 541-592-4000 (Cave Junction office).
