ODF Fire Prevention Illustrator Dies

Hugh Hayes, who drew hundreds of fire prevention illustrations for the Oregon Dept. of Forestry during his 31-year career, died Tuesday at age 98. He was a draftsman for the department but had a cartoonist's wit and a master illustrator's talent. His fire prevention posters were distributed widely in Oregon in the years after World War II well into the 1970s. His pen remained active throughout his life, and he had a popular comic strip, "Rusty Scrapiron," which ran in Wildland Firefighter magazine in the late 1990s.

Rest in peace, Hugh.

Burn Barrel Use Ends July 1

The time has arrived for putting a cork in burn barrels being used on lands protected by the Oregon Dept. of Forestry in southwest Oregon. Starting at 12:01 a.m. Monday, July 1, burn barrels may not be used again until fire season ends, which is typically sometime in mid-October.

The burning of debris piles has been prohibited since fire season began on June 3. Burn barrels have been allowed providing the landowner has obtained a burn barrel permit from ODF or the fire marshal of the structural fire protection district in which the land is located.

Fire Season Regulations Still in Effect Despite Rain

It's rainy and cool in southwest Oregon today, but fire season regulations are still in effect. Burning debris piles isn't allowed, and burn barrel use is allowed only if a permit has been obtained beforehand. (Burn barrel use will be completely prohibited starting July 1.) Also, fireworks may not be used in forests and other wildland areas, or in public campgrounds and parks. And target shooting with tracer ammunition or exploding targets is prohibited in all forests and wildland areas.

For more information, see the Dept. of Forestry's fire season regulations web page, or call one of ODF's unit offices:

Worthington Rd Fire 100% Lined, Mop-Up Underway

Crews working on the 94-acre Worthington Rd. Fire, 2 miles east of Eagle Point, have completed a fireline and are mopping up the perimeter. Two crews, four engines and a water tender are assigned to fire today. A faller is cutting down dangerous snags so crews can extinguish hotspots along the fire's northern edge, which remains the fire's most active area.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. The fire is located on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, which is protected by the Oregon Dept. of Forestry.

Light rainshowers are falling on the fire this morning.
