The open burning of piles and burn barrels in south-central Jackson County will be prohibited starting Monday, Nov. 1, for air quality management purposes. This restriction applies to properties located with the county's Air Quality Maintenance Area, and will be in effect until the end of February 2011.

Five prescribed burns scheduled for today will put columns of smoke into the sky north/northwest of Shady Cove and north of Rogue River. The burns will take place on Bureau of Land Management and private forestlands.

Eight prescribed burns are scheduled to take place today in Josephine County. Two of them are on state lands southeast of Glendale, and the rest are on private forestlands east/northeast of Cave Junction. Expect to see columns of smoke in the air from these locations.
